So naturally putting a ladder against a gutter is almost certainly going to damage the gutter.

Find a balanced position for the ladder leaning against the gutter and step onto the first rung of the ladder. If it still seem ok proceed to climb one rung at a time. The crate will sit directly on the roof keeping the ladder off the gutter preventing contact therefore preventing crushing or bending the gutter. If you are working on the edge of the roof prop the ladder up against the wall of the house as opposed to the gutter.

However and this is something i hope you don t find out firsthand it isn t the right ladder for getting on the roof. Lean one up against the house extended all the way and it ll probably touch the gutters no problem. Where possible avoid leaning the ladder against the gutter. Not just the bending but it also protects the gutter from scratches that might occur from leaning the ladder against it.
